Federal painted and inlaid stand with twist-turned legs
New Hampshire, c. 1820
Birch, white pine, mahogany veneer and birds-eye maple veneer with original brown grained finish, 29 x 19 1⁄2 x 19 1⁄2 inches
In a fine state of preservation

This New Hampshire stand is an individualistic expression of the Federal style created by an inspired rural artisan. It is fashioned from native Birchwood with white pine secondary wood and retains its original dark brown grain painted finish; with mahogany veneered panels on the aprons with birds-eye maple veneered banding. The distinctively twist-turned legs relate this example to a birds-eye maple worktable with school girl decoration from Rockingham County, New Hampshire, which is illustrated in Stacy C. Hollander, Ed., American Radiance: The Ralph Esmerian Gift to the American
Folk Art Museum (New York, 2001), fig. 248.
