Carved and Paint Decorated Watch Hutch
A Carved and Paint Decorated Watch Hutch New England, Mid 19th Century White pine 11 3/4 x 3 x 2 inches With scrolling top, carved and paint-decorated elements, turned side supports and star-carved base. Pocket watches, with their delicate mechanisms, needed to be kept upright to maintain their working condition; watch hutches were devised to store pocket watches either at night or whenever their owner didn't want to carry them. This particular example demonstrates carved elements - fans and stars - that are frequently associated with scrimshaw and other nautical antiques. The presence of these characteristics may indicate that this hutch was made along the New England coast.
