Seated Mother Flanked by Her Two Standing Children
American, circa 1810
Oil on pine panel, 21 x 17 inches, with original gilt frame
This remarkable triple portrait dates from the earliest years of the American Federal period and shares common authorship with the famous portrait entitled “Two Children” (54.100.2), one of the iconic portraits from the personal collection of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller. “Two Children” was discovered in Bucks County, Pennsylvania prior to 1933, and sold by the pioneer folk art dealer Edith Gregor Halpert (1900-1970) to collector Abby Aldrich Rockefeller (1874-1948).
