A portrait of a beautiful young lady “The Ainsworth Girl,” probably New England, circa 1830

Description

Oil on canvas, 34 x 28 inches

This remarkable portrait of an incredibly beautiful lady in a brilliant orange dress wearing a lace bonnet and collar and a green chocker necklace is considered by us to be at the highest level of naive portraiture. She is referred to as “The Ainsworth Girl’ as she was discovered at the Ainsworth house in Medina, Ohio at North Elmwood Street by Ed Brown and Ross Trump when the house was being torn down. Although the artist remains anonymous, rarely do we see folk portraiture of this quality appeal, presence and sophistication.
