Paint-Decorated Dome-Top Trunk

Categories: ,

Probably South Shaftsbury, Vermont, circa 1820-1830
Basswood, original iron latch, original painted decoration, 11 x 23 3⁄4 x 11 inches.
The original painted decoration on this trunk represents the boldest expression known to us among a related group of Federal-style chests and boxes originating in South Shaftsbury, Vermont.

These are often identified as “Matteson school” because some of the chests bear signatures of members of the Matteson family, including Thomas H. Matteson.
